New York City will join over three dozen cities across the world holding major demonstrations to mark the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Beginning in Foley Square, Manhattan, at noon, the March 16th March Against Racism and Fascism will take place, organized by the coalition of United Against Racism and Fascism-NYC, groups and individuals describing themselves as “united to mobilize mass opposition to the resurgent far-right.”
Coalition members for March 16 include Black Rose, Black Lives Matter-Brooklyn, CODE Pink, Copwatch Patrol Unit-Brooklyn Sector, FLAC (Flower Lovers Advocating for Communities), the Freedom Socialist Party, the Greek Solidarity Movement (AKNY), the Green Party-Manhattan, the International Socialist Organization-NYC, the IWW-NYC, Jewish Voice for Peace-NYC, Liberty Tree For a Democratic Revolution, Metropolitan Anarchist Coordinating Council, MTOPP (Movement to Protect the People), Outlive Them NYC, Noam Chomsky, Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights, Occupy Wall Street NYC, Socialist Action, RUSA-LGBT, Redneck Revolt — NYC & Long Island, and Socialist Alternative-NYC. List still in formation. All are committed to showing the far-right and fascists that human empathy always outnumbers the ideology of hatred in the streets of NYC.
For the last four years, the number of hate groups and hate crimes in the U.S. has dramatically increased, as the election of Donald Trump in 2016 emboldened organized white nationalists and fascist gangs to take to the streets across the country. At a time in which crime in NYC is at an all-time low, hate crimes and sexual assaults are on a steady climb.
Far-right parties are on the rise worldwide. Just like in the U.S., right-wing extremists use the global refugee crisis to push anti-immigrant laws. Their extreme ideology also targets women, people of color, LGBTQI+ people, Muslims and Jews, poor people, and workers.
Andy Ratto, a member of United Against Racism and Fascism-NYC, stated “we are offering the umbrella of UARF-NYC to educate the public about the threats that fascism and racism pose to our society. We are illuminating how such ideology manifests, while offering connections to the local resources available to fight back.”
Another member, Priscilla Grim, added, “Racism is not abstract or far away. In NYC, racism appears in the most segregated public schools in the United States, and by way of the rotting buildings of NYCHA public housing. Through the NYPD and ICE, the system of white supremacy assaults our communities by arresting and locking away black and brown men, women, and children into the largest prison population in the world. Institutionalized racism is the foundation driving the fascist agenda worldwide, assaulting the freedom of all.”
