Two years ago the Greek authorities carried out a terrible crime when they sank the ship Adriana, off the coast of Pylos, Greece, on 14 June 2023. They killed more than 600 refugees.
They left over six hundred families in Pakistan, Egypt, Syria and Palestine mourning the loss of their loved ones.
We join our voices with the survivors of the shipwreck who denounce that their ship was overturned by the violent towing of a Coast Guard vessel, which supposedly wanted to push them back to Italy.
They had the right to receive asylum and hospitality, but — like all refugees and migrants— they faced fences; persecution by the Coast Guard, border guards and Frontex; concentration camps; pushbacks and death.
We stand by the victims, the survivors and their families who continue to seek justice, with the punishment of the culprits: the government, the Coast Guard and the EU agency, Frontex.
As we remember that racist crime, we are witnessing the racist raids on working class neighbourhoods of Los Angeles.
These attacks are being carried out by Trump’s militarised force, “Immigration and Customs Enforcement”, to which the far right US president is now adding 2,000 troops from the National Guard.
But the good news is that ordinary people in Los Angeles have turned out in their thousands to defend their neighbours, friends and relatives in the face of this attempt to destroy people’s lives and break up families.
Racist policies are terrible in themselves, but they also pave the way for the rise of the far right and fascists internationally.
This 20 June marks World Refugee Day, a reminder of the urgent need to defend the human rights of refugees, migrants, and all people.
We call on movements around the world to organise actions around Saturday 21 June.
- No cover-up of the crime of Pylos, punish the murderers!
- Solidarity with the people of Los Angeles!
- No to racism and the far right everywhere!
- We are the majority, let’s stand together!
